Flasheaba.com – a cabinet of curiosity

This artwork by Howard Reingold explains pretty good what my vision of flasheaba.com is.

The Pataphysical Slot Machine is a community oracle is designed to work a bit like an interactive I-Ching or Tarot deck: we invite you to ask a question about your future. When you are ready, click on the big red button — and ‘instructions from the future’ will be revealed, prompting you to open one of 21 “wonderboxes.” Each wonderbox contains a scene that will help you reflect about your life. We’re asking our art community to create the scenes for this collaborative knowledge accumulator.

This project was inspired by the Renaissance’s “cabinets of curiosity” (see Wunderkammer), mexican retablos and french poet Alfred Jarry’s Pataphysics movement.

As he compares the artwork to a Renaissance cabine of curiosity, flasheaba.com is also supposed to be a place to explore for new insights.

I subscribe to Howard on Facebook, I recommend you to subscribe too. A good way to fill your Facebook wall with some mind opening content. Howard is one of the people who was there to form the internet when it first was formed. He has the whole history and is definitely interesting to listen too. His theories about social media was started to be formed long before community management existed as a job title.

Flasheaba is a blog, learning resource and archive. As a planner all I’m always looking for the flashes of having a new insight. This site is an invitation for you to join me!

Argentinian slang used to say that someone is thinking or seeing things that are not real. (like delusional)

-Viste a esa rubia? Era hermosa!
-No podes flashear asi!! era horrible!

-Did you see that blonde? she was gorgeous!
– You can’t “flashear” like that!! She was horrible!

What do employers look for when they read your blog?

When I chose my blog as my final project at Hyper Island I knew it would be good to present who I am to possible employers or clients. I also just found a very nice blog post Reviewz n’ tips that confirms my suspicions!

Through your blog the employer is able to discover sides of you that are difficult to determine during an interview or by watching a portfolio or reading a CV. Through reading your blog he is able to get to know your values, character and personality; communication skills and thinking process and your ideas and creativity. You can always describe how you are and work as a person during an interview, but a blog gives your possible employer the opportunity to see for himself wither what you say you are is real or not.

The more transparent and honest I’m in my relationships with people the more positive response I get and it motivates me to show more of myself and be myself. When the picture others have of you corresponds more to who you are, your self-esteem and confidence increases. This is something we talked about during the first week at Hyper Island, and my blog has been one of my ways of working with this through reflection.

Another way to improve in this area is to get feedback, something we got to practice a lot a Hyper Island. To get used to receive harsh feedback was very new to many of us but it made our skin thicker while we learned about ourselves. Feedback should be done in a constructive way though. I see my blog as a tool to reflect and learn, not only about digital media but also about myself. This also means that you can read it in order to learn more about not only digital media and method, but also about me.
