What is the next big thing? When I say that I work with digital media people always ask me this question. But the next thing of what? What people usually mean with the next big thing is the next bit thing after Facebook. I don’t really like answering this question with a straight answer. Both because honestly I don’t know and even if I did it would probably change and since it depends on what area you are interested in I need to know this before I can answer.
A search on the term gives you a few possible answers. I like Quora for these types of questions. Read the answers here! Here you can also find a few good tips on how to think to find out what the next big thing is. One example of this is to look where investments go. Health care is an area that attracts a lot of new investments right now, we are becoming older and older and need more healthcare while there will be fewer people available to work in health care. This industry is currently attracting a lot of developer.
One thing that is the next big thing, and is already happening, is the globalization. One person that knows how to capitalize on this and has the financial power to do it is Matt Barrie. Recently he launched the new Linkedin for digital freelancing – freelancer.com. What this means for us working in digital media is that anyone anywhere (this is not new, but it will certainly become more common) can work anywhere with anyone. What Matt has done is finding a way to capitalize on this new thing.
I haven’t tried it out properly yet to say how good it works and it’s still very new. To use the site you also have to pay, which makes the barrier to enter higher but in the same time it will probably raise the quality. As part of the launching campaign freelancer.com threw a couple of competitions where you could win money that is added to your account. I was lucky to win 1000 dollar which I can either take out or use in the site.
I believe there are two ways to try to answer this question. Either you try to guess what other people will do in the future, or you create the next big thing yourself!
I would like to dedicate this post to my link-list which you can find under I read in the menu on top of this page. I have tried out using both Bookmarks and Delicious to save my favorite links, but I’m too lazy to go to another site every time I want to go to my favorite sites and I would also like to reach my bookmarks from any computer as well as share them with my friends.
I do visit my own blog a lot, at least three times a week when I write a new post, to write new posts I need inspiration and it might also be interesting for my readers to see where I get my inspiration from. What better place to save my links than on my blog then!
In time the list grew bigger and bigger and I started to organize them after different categories.
In the top you find the links for my morning habits. I start every morning viewing some newspapers online to see if anything new happened in the world.
My favorite type of inspiration is to see what other people has created with technology and code. If I weren’t a creative strategist I would love spending my days just building installations and applications like these.
Next comes my links for inspiration. These links doesn’t apply to any specific area, they are more for finding new ideas in general.
Next comes Social Media and advertising. It’s good to stay up to date with what other people are doing in the business but remember to not get to hung up on it, it will make it harder to come up with your own ideas.
For my strategist research I like to read about trends and how to use analytics tools. To read business magazines is also a good way to stay up to date with what’s happening.
If you have any other links that are kick ass for inspiration, please feel free to post them below.
I’m going to do something really fun tonight! Party for my brain! I’m going to look at all the submissions for the Bees Awards! The first Social Media awards. Because I received a nominee in the awards last year I got to be in the jury this year! I’t going to be very interesting to see what is happening in social media right now and I hope to get a lot of inspiration.
But what what should I look for when I judge the entries?
Social medias are nothing but tools! A tool that helps the user do something and is useful is a good application of social media.
Once more Mayka posts something that really relates to where I am right now and that really helps and comforts me!
I can really relate to what Steve Jobs says in this video:
To be able to succeed in something you really need to love what you do, because you are going to struggle and there is going to be a lot of worrying. At this point any rational person would give up, but love is not rational and if you love what you do you will get through it and succeed.
This is what I’m experiencing right now and have been for a couple of months with Project Fly. I never know what’s going on and I can never plan more than one month ahead. I guess the only reason why I do it is because I’m having so much fun! Actually all this caos makes me more creative in my profession as well since my mind is working on solving problems all the times since all experiences are new. Read old post on this here –>
What can I say. Great way by Coca Cola to create attention for a small event. I’m really curious to see what’s going on there!
Turns out Coca Cola exchanged empty bottles for new ones and a secret gift at a shopping mall in Singapore! Great use of social media – connecting online with the real world bringing people together and doing something!!! But the post would have been even more powerful with a great picture to go with it, for the share button 😉
